Bonn has a very active and renowned mathematics community, which pursues research in all fields from the theoretical core to applications in other sciences.
University of Bonn
The University of Bonn is one of Germany's best places to study mathematics and home to four research institutes:
- the Mathematics Institute,
- the Institute for Applied Mathematics,
- the Institute for Numerical Simulation, and
- the Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics.
The Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics also hosts a fascinating museum on mathematics, the Arithmeum. Its collection ranges from mechanical computers and historical arithmetic books to links between science and art.
Hausdorff Center for Mathematics
The four mathematics institutes of the university together with the Institute for Economics and Social Sciences and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics competed successfully in the Excellence Initiative of the German Government, and acquired funding to create the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics as a Cluster of Excellence.
One part of this project is the Hausdorff Research Institute for Mathematics (HIM), which invites guest scientists to participate in trimester research activities on different topics from all fields of mathematics. The Hausdorff Center also has a PhD program, the Bonn International Graduate School in Mathematics (BIGS).
Bethe Center for Theoretical Physics
The Bethe Center is a joint enterprise of theoretical physicists and mathematicians at various institutes of or connected with the University of Bonn. In the spirit of Hans Bethe it fosters research activities over a wide range of theoretical and mathematical physics.
